Tattoo that represents depression

So I love the flamingo and wish we would have stopped there. Still healing, but my my friend told me she thinks the splash effect background looks like a rash and now I that's all I can see. I think the background detracts from the flamingo and it all kind of blends together. How do I fix it?

I'm looking to get my first tattoo and this is the basic design I sketched up. The scribble twig is supposed to be a fern. Alas I am no artist so I was wondering if anyone with a bit more experience had any idea of how to improve upon it. It is only going to he aboit 2-3 inches long. (OC)
